Wallace nears 100 wins

Alex Wallace has been on the Chapin High School Varsity guys’ tennis team since the seventh grade.  As the number two player on the team, Wallace has amassed over 85 wins and has his sights on 100 by season’s end.

Coach John Rodgers says, “He’s not the biggest or strongest on the court but he has a bulldog mentality. When he gets a hold of you, he doesn’t let go during a match. He is one of the toughest competitors.”

Wallace always works hard to contribute to his team

Ever since he was nine, Wallace knew he wanted to play tennis.

“I was in my Grandma’s neighborhood.  I was playing at the courts in her neighborhood when the pro that taught down there approached me asking if I had or ever wanted to play serious tennis.  He introduced me to the Junior Tennis League (JTL) and that’s how I started playing.  After JTL, I entered tournaments and realized tennis was something I wanted to stick with,” related Wallace.

Wallace’s first year on the high school team as a middle schooler saw him in the number five singles spot.  In the eighth grade, he moved up to number three singles. Finally, his sophomore year he moved up to number two.

Throughout his high school career, Wallace’s main goal has been to play college tennis.  He has already decided when he graduates he is going to play at Anderson University.

Wallace has had many memorable experiences on the tennis team,

“I will never forget having the longest matches. I would always be the last one on the court due to close matches and I would always have to play ten point tiebreakers.  Winning state will always be something I remember as well.  It was a great experience for me and my team.”

Wallace, along with the other seniors on the team, holds an amazing record of 103-10. Since Wallace will be graduating this year, he wants to serve as a role model for the upcoming players that are going to take his spot on the team.

“I want to encourage the players to keep working hard and strive to be the best.  You never know if there will be a tomorrow, so no matter what the circumstances are play your hardest.”
