Chapin Athletic Program Ready To Continue Excellence

School is back in and for some people, the most exciting part of that is the fall sports. In every sport there is plenty to look forward to this fall season. After being recognized as one of the top athletic programs in the Midlands, Eagle sports are ready to keep excelling this year.

CROSS COUNTRY

One sport many are excited about this year is Cross Country.
Senior Fabian Hardy said, “My favorite part of Cross Country this year is the competition. I like to compete against other competitive teams and being able to win as a team makes it even better.”
Both the boys and girls teams have positive outlooks for this season. With a few returning veterans and some promising new talent, the team hopes to continue its outstanding pace.
Coach Jack LeGrand stated, “We are very new and have a lot of new people. The biggest challenge is to get there every week.”
LeGrand believes that the teams in-state ranks will improve as the season goes on.  They challenges are many but Coach LeGrand and the team have been training for months for a chance at the state crown.

VARSITY VOLLEYBALL

Lady Eagle Volleyball is so far having a successful season. Coach Mary Jo Jenny is excited about this season and is glad to have a great team this year.
Coach Jenny said,” We are getting better every game,… We have players that step up when others are down and it makes it so much better for a coach.”
Varsity did well last year and this year’s squad should be no different. The girls have their eyes set on the state championship this year.
Senior Sara Jefferson said, “I am looking forward to the state playoffs and taking the road to the state championship match.”
The team will have to beat some tough competition like A.C. Flora and Airport to make their dream come true but with the Lady Eagles the sky’s the limit.

VARSITY FOOTBALLL

Most students do not think fall sports without thinking Friday night football. After facing some tough competitors, the team is struggling a bit to find its stride but Coach Justin Gentry feels that it is only a matter of time before the Eagles take off.
Coach Gentry said, “Our team is improving every day. If we keep improving and getting better, we should be ready to make some noise come region time.”
This year there are many younger players, but there are also older guys to help them along.
Junior Matt Charpia returns to quarterback the team to victory and Kicker Zac McCall hopes to add a few extra points to seal the deal.
While the team may short on years they are long on talent.
Senior Greer Layne said, “I’m enjoying being a senior and having a leadership position on the team.”
Layne along with the Coach Gentry’s expertise on the sidelines will combine to add some W’s in the win column as the season progresses. Win or lose- Eagle fans will be there on Friday night to cheer on their team.

GIRLS TENNIS

Another popular fall sport is Girls Tennis. Led by SC Hall of fame coach John Rodgers, the girls are expected to do well this season.
Senior Katie Waters said, “I’m excited about getting a new role in leadership, being a senior, and being able to set a good example for my younger teammates.”
The girls are a close-knit team and work hard together every match and every practice. All this hard work hopes to payoff in a championship season.
Waters also said, “I love my entire team and going to try to make the most out of every match.

SWIMMING

The Chapin swim team has so far had a successful season. As of now, they are undefeated in this season.
Senior Taylor Yuris said, “My favorite part about being on a swim team is knowing that I can always help someone and knowing that I have a bunch of friends that I have made through the years.”
The swim team will hopefully remain undefeated throughout the season. They are expected to do well this season.

GIRLS GOLF

Chapin girl’s golf is working on building a team. Last year the team lost many important graduating players. Coach Honea is working on shaping his team because he sees that they have potential.

There are a few returning players on the team this year and they are going to be expected to help the team tremendously through the season.
