Student Feature: Sophie Carlick

Here at Chapin there are plenty of students with all kinds of aspirations, kids with dreams of being something like a lawyer, or a marine botanist. But none of them are quite as interesting as the future career of freshman, Sophie Carlick. Sophie aspires to be in the roller derby in the Olympics. When asked what she wanted to be when growing up, she answered “Everything. But if I had to narrow it down, a roller derby Olympian, and then an English teacher.” This is an interesting and uncommon answer for the average high school freshman.

Her dream began a few years ago when she found her parent’s old roller skates in their house. As soon as she tried them on, she knew that’s what she was going to do. “I started practicing on our carpet, thinking it would be easier. I fell a lot but eventually I got better.” Sophie said. Since then she has moved up and outside on her skates, getting better, though she’s not quite Olympics material yet.

She even has a year plan in motion to accomplish her goals. First, she plans on learning, get really good at roller skating and practice positive thinking. Sophie practices on her own when she has free time. Then after approximately six months of just skating practice, she’ll start to work on building up her endurance and stamina training to be sure that she’s fully prepared to take on the Olympics.

Her plans for after the Olympics are much different than one might expect, “I want to be an English teacher when I retire from skating. Languages fascinate me, and I love teaching people about new things.” Sophie wants to teach high school English because according to her, high schoolers are more mature and smarter than little kids. Her friends and family are in complete support of her dreams, and think that they are as creative and original as Sophie. Her goals in life reflect her fun personality.
