As the new academic year begins, Chapin High School is proud to welcome a number of new educators to its faculty—among them, Mr. McLaurin, a dynamic new addition to the mathematics department. Although this marks his first official year as a full-time teacher, Mr. McLaurin arrives at Chapin with a deep sense of purpose and a strong personal connection to the teaching profession.
His passion for education began long before he ever stood at the front of a classroom. Reflecting on his formative years, Mr. McLaurin recalls the profound influence that his own teachers had on his life. “All my high school teachers made such a huge impact on me,” he shares. “I wanted to pay that forward in some way.” It was this lasting impression—one of mentorship, encouragement, and personal growth—that first sparked his interest in becoming a teacher.
While he briefly considered pursuing a career in English or science education, Mr. McLaurin ultimately chose to focus on mathematics, a subject he has always held close to his heart. His academic path took him first to Clemson University, where he earned his undergraduate degree. He then advanced his education through graduate studies at the University of South Carolina, equipping himself with the pedagogical tools and content expertise needed to succeed in the classroom.
Mr. McLaurin’s teaching journey came full circle during his student teaching experience, much of which took place right here at Chapin High. Immersed in the school’s culture and daily life, he quickly developed a strong affinity for the Chapin community. The atmosphere of mutual support, academic excellence, and school pride made a lasting impression on him and helped solidify his decision to return to Chapin in a full-time role. “The strong sense of community and welcoming environment made his decision easy,” the article notes—and it’s a sentiment shared by many who walk through Chapin’s doors for the first time.
Now stepping into his role as a full-time teacher, Mr. McLaurin is excited to bring both enthusiasm and fresh perspective to his classroom. His approach is student-centered, grounded in the belief that meaningful relationships and high expectations are central to academic success. As a young educator, he also brings an empathetic understanding of students’ challenges and a desire to help them see math not as a barrier, but as an opportunity for growth.
Outside of the classroom, Mr. McLaurin is eager to become more involved in the life of the school and contribute to its broader mission. Whether through extracurricular activities, mentoring, or collaborative projects with fellow educators, he sees this new role as more than just a job—it is, for him, a calling.
Chapin High is thrilled to welcome Mr. McLaurin to the Eagle family. His passion for teaching, combined with his thoughtful approach and commitment to student success, make him a valuable asset to the faculty. As the school year unfolds, we look forward to the energy and insight he will bring—not only to his students but to the entire Chapin community.
