On Christmas Day Nigerian Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, went on a flight bound for Detroit, and had a bomb. Incidentally, someone saw Umar trying to light the bomb and attacked him.
In effect, Obama implemented some of the new securities airlines would begin to follow. They include: more air marshals during flights, new terror watch list guidelines, no getting up before the last hour of the flight, more police dogs and extra pat-downs.
Though, this isn’t the first time the government has raised airline securities. On September 11th, 2001 Bush improved security aircraft, security screening, and stricter identity checks. These securities also included restrictions of items on a carry on bag.
Tim Anderson, an English teacher said, “I use to work at Austin, Texas airport and a lot of the time hunters would come in, and they would have bullets, ammunitions and fire arms, guns in their carry-on. In effect we would have to shut down the airport for a while.”
Some things that are not allowed on the plane are: sporting goods, knives, cutting instruments, firearms, ammunition, paintball guns, tools, and dry ice. Also, there are some odd things, they include toothpaste, tweezers, fingernail clippers, gel-shoe inserts, gel-type candles, snow globes, and Christmas ornaments.
Another controversial item is liquids, according to Independenttraveler.com, “Liquids and gels must be in individual containers of three ounces or less and placed inside one clear, quart-size, plastic, zip-top bag. The TSA emphasizes that containers should fit comfortably into your bag, and that only one bag is permitted per passenger.”
Blythe Padgett, a senior, was once flying home from Washington, and “took away my favorite perfume.” They did this because there was more then 3 oz.
Although, it is argued that sometimes, there is not enough security. Johnaca Crace, a senior, was at the airport the day after the Christmas bombing, “I was really worried because there was not much security at all. Also, there weren’t many lines.” Jessica Volin, a junior was also on the plane after the Christmas bombing, “I flew from Charlotte to Jacksonville, but it took longer then expected because we had to stay on the plan for an extra hour because of ‘paper work’.”
Not only will Obama’s administration be making the securities stricter here, he will be making them stricter worldwide, “We do need the full-body scan, especially when you have countries like Nigeria, which have inadequate security to begin with; then you have passengers transiting in Amsterdam and coming here.”
