Girls’ lacrosse tryouts are being held on November 1 at Chapin High School and Coach Kim Curnutt is hoping to have a large turnout.
There will be no cuts, but the girls will be divided into JV and Varsity teams based on both skill and potential. Middle schoolers will automatically be on JV, and high school seniors on varsity. After conditioning ends in December and the teams have been split, JV will practice three days a week and varsity will practice five days a week.
The object of lacrosse is to score goals on the opposing team using a netted lacrosse stick.
The team is a district team and all players from District 5 middle and high schools are invited to try out.
“It’s not really weird playing for a Chapin team,” Dutch Fork freshman Taylor Rae Potts says, “We all work together and you kind of forget that we even go to different schools.”
Protective goggles, cleats, a lacrosse stick, and a mouth guard are required to play, and they can be ordered through Coach Kim or bought at SMS Sportsworld.
2009-10 was the first year that lacrosse was offered as a district wide sport. The program is looking to improve on last year’s record and increase overall interest in the sport.
“We are excited about moving forward and being a better program this second year,” Coach Curnutt said.
Along with Coach Curnutt, a lacrosse hall of famer who played in two World Cups for the USA team, four more coaches are joining the team. The JV coaches are June Cross and Sami Sessler, and for varsity it is Brit Kadlowec and Melissa Turlington.
Everyone is encouraged to tryout, even if they have no experience.
“When I first started playing I was afraid people would get mad at me if I dropped the ball or something, but everyone is really nice,” Chapin eighth grader Grace Wheaton said.

“Just come out and try playing because it is a new sport, it’s a lot of fun, and it’s just a really great time,” Irmo junior Hannah Hirsch said.
