Chapin Soccer Gains Two Stars
On Saturday, May 14, 2016, Chapin’s Men and Women Varsity Soccer teams won the state championship at Irmo’s W.C. Hawkins Stadium.
The boys outscored Myrtle Beach by 3-2. Cooper Woodham got an early goal and Matthew Greco added one to the scoreboard the 21st minute, making it a 2-0 lead on Myrtle Beach. Chapin’s lead came to an end when Abdul Mashrifov scored on a penalty kick in the 49th minute. Soon after, Foster Russell’s goal resulted in the match to be tied 2-2. Woodham knocked in the game-winning goal in the 71st minute.
At 11:30 am, the girls faced a rematch of the 2014 state championship against Hilton Head. Although fouls allowed Hilton Head to gain 3 on Chapin, they were able to come back with an outstanding 7-3 victory. Salley Slice, Shelby Waites and Jordan Dawsey each contributed one goal for Chapin. Rachel Cosby, a Chapin forward was unable to participate in the previous season due to an ACL injury. However, Cosby bounced back this season with four goals in the state championship.
This state title is the first in Chapin Women’s Soccer history. Jordan Dawsey, senior captain, said, “It’s an awesome feeling knowing our hard work has paid off.
