Chapin Steps Up
On January 27, Chapin High School held a pep rally to pump up the student body and staff for the upcoming basketball game against AC Flora. The faculty played a basketball game, students participated in a tug-o-war and various sports were recognized. The most surprising event, was the step team performing in honor of the celebrations.
Not many people were aware that Chapin had a step team because it was created about two weeks before the actual performance.
“We stayed after school until about 7:30 everyday leading up to the pep rally. We might start performing at pep rallies and football games,” said Ashley Pate, freshman and performer.
Alex James, a freshman and the creator of the Chapin Step Team, has been step dancing since sixth grade on a competing team called “Royal Diamonds.”
James’ goal for Chapin is to enter step competitions against other schools.
“I have a love for stepping. I like beats. I like rhythm. I like music and sound,” said James.
His passion for music comes as no surprise, since James has recently auditioned for America’s Got Talent, a popular television show that seeks talent across the nation. Although he didn’t use his step dancing skill, James showcased yet another one of his artistic talents, which is singing, for the performance.
The Chapin community will be looking forward to what James and the six other dancers have in store for us. There is great potential for this newly found group of students and hopefully, they can take it to the next level.
