Chapin Brews

The Coffee Shelf

Chapin is fortunate to be the home of two locally owned specialty coffee stores, The Coffee Shelf and The Wired Goat Cafe. Both stores are redefining coffee shops with their modern qualities, treats and forms of entertainment.

Since opening in April 2016, The Coffee Shelf has been a huge hit with the Chapin community and is praised for its unique combination of a bookstore and high-quality coffee. An assortment of novels are available on the shelves of this store for purchase, and it is known for its relaxing atmosphere due to the combination of books and coffee. Customers can enjoy a wide variety of hot, iced and blended drinks, in addition to muffins, pastries and cookies.

“We wanted to provide Chapin with something more than just a coffee house; a place where our community could feel comfortable just hanging out… When Barnes & Noble left the Harbison area, I think everyone assumed that business model was broken. But in our opinion it left a void in the market, and we are happy to be here to fill that need, which is the combination of books and coffee,” says Coffee Shelf owner, Jerry Caldwell.

Each week, the Coffee Shelf has a special drink of the week that is named after characters from their books on sale, and has a book of the month program. The book chosen is 10% off of the cover price throughout the month.  In addition to the stores’ constant release of new books and new drinks, customers can look forward to book signings from local authors, poetry slams and art displays.

The Wired Goat’s Chapin store has been open for almost three years. Customers can order unique coffees, baked goods and teas. The store also has a bistro-style menu. Goods from the Wired Goat are all fresh, using local vegetables and milk, and nearby meat, eggs, yogurt and cheese sources. This store hosts performances by local music artists and sells artwork made by members of the Chapin community.

Chapin High School student, Raegan Brizek, is a frequent customer of both shops and says, “I try to give my service equally to both because I love the two places.”
