Chapin Students’ Bracket Update
Heading into the sweet 16 of the NCAA basketball tournament, let’s be honest the majority of brackets are busted. I mean the top overall seed lost in the second round along with two seeds Duke and Louisville. The upsets have been demoralizing to those who hoped this would be the year they could have the perfect bracket that millions of Americans attempt to create each year.
However, not all brackets are completely busted. Chapin High School junior, Ronnie Powers, still has a bracket which is measured in the one hundredth percentile by the ESPN Tournament Challenge app. He has 15 of the 16 teams remaining correct. He has collected 570 of the possible 640 points available thus far in the tournament.
Ronnie said he “looked up mismatches with teams as well as trying to figure out which teams were hot,” but he said “the upsets were tough to pick, but what I tried to do this year is to see which team had size advantages over the higher seeds as well as teams that had experienced guards.”
Ronnie will be cheering on the South Carolina as he picked the Gamecocks to win it all in his bracket.
Ronnie is one of the fortunate few to still have an in tact bracket, but others like junior, Leslie Correll, have not been as lucky. Her bracket is 38 percent correct as calculated by the NCAA March Madness app.
She has eight of her sweet 16 teams remaining in the field. Although she does have some hope with her national champion still alive, the Kentucky Wildcats.
“I didn’t watch very much basketball, but I wanted wanted to join on the March Madness hype. It hasn’t gone too well,” said Leslie about her bracket making experience.
March is all about the upset. It’s what we all look forward too. So, sometimes when creating your bracket it’s about choosing the correct upsets. There is such thing as overdoing it with the upsets.
Senior, Cooper Woodham, can attest to this statement as his bracket is in the 7.2 percentile in the ESPN Tournament Challenge app.
“The game of basketball is more that just the sport, it’s a war. And how many times in history have we seen the small army rise up and defeat the fully equipped legion? More than once. Therefore you have pick more than one upset in your bracket,” said Cooper Woodham about why he chose so many upsets.
Although Cooper is still hopeful, considering he has three Final Four teams and his National Champion, the UCLA Bruins, left.
The rest of the tournament should be interesting especially for those who are still hoping to salvage a decent bracket, but if it doesn’t work out, there is always next year.
