Throughout the beginning of the school year several tropical storms/hurricanes have occurred that have led to three E-learning days.
Though the 2024-2025 school year is only into the 3rd month of school, District 5 has already had three E-Learning days. The first day of school in August was impacted by the remnants of Hurricane Debby. At the end of September the Chapin community was rocked by the remnants of Hurricane Helene.
Though students missed the first day of school due to the dangerous weather and high winds, District 5 has added an E-Learning Day to Fall break as a make-up day.
Several students, along with some teachers, have had a variety of different viewpoints on whether they like or dislike doing school work from home.
Zlata Putintseva, junior at chapin, “I loved E-learning days. They give me the opportunity to complete work at my own pace without having to make up school days. Making up school days put so much more pressure on the students .”
“I like them, they’re a lot easier and more fun to do rather than having to show up to school and do the same work for so many more hours,” said junior A’Najzah Mayers.
Mr Johnson, English teacher at Chapin, “I don’t know, I have very mixed feelings about E-learning days. Like, there are some students that I know rely on school for friends or just to get out the house you know? I feel like its hard on the students sometimes, plus I love doing more group actives and its harder to do so from home.”
Hurricane Helene, or also known as the tropical storm Helene, was large enough to stretch across Florida, Georgia, the Carolinas and Tennessee. The massive storm left behind flooded communities and knocked out power to parts of the Midlands.
