South Carolina Day at Chapin High School

March 18th is recognized as South Carolina day. Chapin High School celebrated this statewide holiday by teaching its students the state dance, The Shag.

According to the District 5 website, “John C. Calhoun’s birthday on March 18th [marks] South  Carolina Day. John C. Calhoun (1782-1850) served as U.S. secretary of war, vice president, briefly as secretary of state and longtime as a South Carolina senator.”

Many Chapin students went to the student lounge during power hour to learn how to shag.

“It was really fun and it was great to learn about something really important to our state” said sophomore, Josh Corning, when asked what he thought of the shagging lessons.

When asked her views of the shagging lessons, senior Carolina Folwer said, “I loved it. I was taught when I was little, and I love the shag, but not many people know how to do it. I think it’s great that we got free lessons teaching us how to do our state dance. We should do it again.”
