National Library Week is Underway at CHS
Several classes at Chapin High School are participating in National Library Week from April 10-16. Established in 1958, National Library Week is a national observance sponsored by the American Library Association and libraries across the country. According to the ALA, it is a time to celebrate the contributions of our nation’s libraries and librarians and to promote library use and support.
“It will expose them [students] to different genres of books so they could check out something they normally would not,” said CHS librarian Mrs. Adams.
English teachers bring the students to the library and allow them to look at the nine genres (Non-Fiction, Mystery, Banned Books, Historical Fiction, Horror/Thrillers, Romance, Fantasy/Sci-Fi, Action/Sports, and Biography) displayed at each station. A full list of all the novels are on a Book Tasting Menu provided for the students.
Best selling authors, such as Nicholas Sparks, Gary Paulsen, Edgar Allan Poe, and James Patterson, are represented through their novels that are suggested for students to read.
After ‘sampling’ the books on display, the students go in a photo booth for picturistic fun. This activity attempts to change a student’s perspective on reading. Also, students have the opportunity to enter and possibly win a free kindle as well as other smaller prizes.
To conclude the book tasting, students watch book trailers in the library theater while eating popcorn. After all, what’s a movie without popcorn?
