Every year, seniors are able to sign up to join a half marathon team lead by Mrs. Williams and Mrs. Latham. However, it’s not as easy as just “signing up.” Students must build up their running ability and endurance in preparation for the race.

This is the 4th ever half marathon team at Chapin High, and there are 26 seniors who have all dedicated their time to preparing for the race this upcoming weekend. Half marathons are 13.1 miles, and in order to prepare for completion, students had to start small, and then build up to running 10 miles.

The half marathon will be taking place on Saturday, March 3rd in downtown Columbia. As the date nears, students are getting excited, yet also nervous about the race. Garrett Dean feels really excited and recaps on his experience, “When we first started training in December, 13.1 miles seemed like an impossible task, but now that I’m here, it’s just another run.”

Another participant, Katie Arthur, says, “Well I am definitely nervous but I’ve worked so hard and that will pay off. I will feel really accomplished once I finish.”

“We’ve been training so long and it’s going to be hard but I’m looking forward to crossing the finish line. Hopefully I don’t cramp up too much,” said Chase Haywood, another participant, is also very excited about the race.

The half marathon will start at 7:30 a.m. near the SC State House at 1100 Gervais St Columbia, SC.
