Broadcasting Bus Tour
CHAPIN, SC – Students at Chapin High School explored careers in sports media, television news and radio broadcasting with a Broadcasting Bus Tour.
Williams-Brice Stadium
The tour began at Williams-Brice Stadium with a viewing of the highlight video used to recruit prospective Gamecock football players. Students met with the team that created the video and learned how USC manages sports media including archiving plays in all sports, to running scoreboards that require millions of dollars to operate, to partnering with ESPN for the new SEC Network.
WACH FOX-57
The next stop was at WACH FOX-57 where students were able to see how television newsrooms operate. They sat at the anchor desk, reviewed scripts, learned how shows are directed from the control room and did the weather forecast on the green screen. Students also learned how social media impacts reach and how anchors work to develop relationships with their viewing audience.
Clear Channel
The day ended with a visit to Clear Channel Communications. The Promotions Director shared information about how radio stations are influenced by marketing and also allowed them to watch local personalities working on-air. Students saw the wiring and engineering required to run the various stations in addition to learning tips on how to be successful in talk radio. The visit ended with students winning prizes from the Clear Channel prize stash for answering questions about radio broadcasting.
