All the Right Notes

Not many people may know that there is a whole class at Chapin High School dedicated to learning guitar. Taught by Mr. Lynn, guitar class is a semester long course that consists of playing music and learning scales on the instrument.

A typical day in guitar class starts with setting up supplies, tuning the guitars, completing a few warm ups as a class, and then learning new songs.

“We usually play simple songs like ‘She’s Kinda Hot” and people can bring in song suggestions and that we’ll learn to play,” a junior at Chapin, Tanner Martin, says.

Tanner also said that the class might be playing in the Winter Giving Assembly and they’ve been learning to play Silent Night.

Although students are graded based on worksheets and sometimes playing tests, no previous knowledge of the guitar has to be attained.

Mr. Lynn says that he learned to play the guitar by teaching himself from a book of The Beetles’ songs at the age of thirteen.

“My favorite part of teaching the class is finding music that students like to play and teaching them songs they hear on the radio,” he says.

Alex Stewart, also a junior at Chapin says that he would recommend this class to another student because it’s simple and makes guitar easy to learn. Tanner agrees with this statement by saying that the alternative is an art class.

“I like musical art more than visual art,” he says.

There is not a next step after this class but Mr. Lynn says he wishes there was. Both of the boys agree that they would definitely take it if the option rolled around.
Students of all grades and social groups are able to come together and learn a common instrument with the help of Mr. Lynn. Bringing people together through music here at Chapin High School is what makes us a true Eagle Family.
