Chapin Sports Round-Up

Chapin High School has much to celebrate as the fall sports season is well underway. Several teams have finished as region champions or are preparing to compete in state playoffs. Below is a synopsis of some of the teams and their standings.

Tennis

The Chapin Girls Tennis team are region champs and they have advanced into the playoffs. They start playing next weekend and they find out their opponent on Monday.

Katie Koon, a senior,  thinks that her team has a chance to make it to State, “I think that we have potential to make it all the way if we all stick it out together.”

McCuen Bland, a junior, said “It’s been a great season and I can’t wait for playoffs.”

Volleyball

Chapin’s Volleyball team’s record this season was 13-7. As the season comes to a close, the girls will compete for for the State championship starting with playoffs Thursday, October 19th, at home. This year the team had only one returning senior, Gabriella Mejia.

Coach Jenny said the lack of seniors did not have a negative impact, “they are an experienced group, and we’ll have a lot [of players] coming back next year.”

Heading into the season, the team and Coach Jenny “wanted to be region champs, which [they] finished region runner up. [The team] also wanted to play for a state championship.”

Golf

The Golf team won the region and are going to Lower State on Monday October 16. The team beat A.C. Flora this past week. “We could improve in technique and skill, but we have fun together,” said Darragh James, a junior on the golf team.

Cross Country

The Boys and Girls Cross Country team had a finishing season with an overall record of 2-5. They had several state qualifiers, including junior, Jayden Kingsley.

“It has gone really well. We Won 2 home meets and we have a good chance to place top 3 at state,Individually as well,” said Kingsley.  Jayden finished 12th at The Lake Murray Invitational overall. He had a time of 15:56, a personal best for him.

Swimming

The Boys Swimming team finished with 9 wins, one 1 loss and one tie. The Girls team finished with 8 wins and 3 losses.  They ended the regular season with victories over Irmo High School and Dutch Fork High School. The team will compete in the State Meet at University of South Carolina on  October 14 at 10:30 a.m.  The team will have 23 swimmers will compete in the meet.

Football

The Varsity Football Team’s record is 5 and 2. The team will travel to Lower Richland on October, 13, for their next game. The team rotates two quarterbacks, LaRob Gordon and Roger Pedroni. The receivers say the two quarterbacks doesn’t impact the chemistry of the team during a game.

“It doesn’t mess with the chemistry,” said senior Blake Swick.  Case Barber says that with the current winning streak at three games in a row, a state title is realistic this season. “Yes, I feel like we have a realistic shot if we keep working hard.”
