Are iPads here to stay?

If you walk into an average classroom at Chapin High School will you see students diligently working on their iPads? Or playing games? Has the misuse of the iPads gone too far? Occasionally the rumor will surface that the district may take away our iPads. A school district in Los Angeles recently distributed iPads to students, then took them away due to the misuse and hacking of the wireless system. Will Chapin be next?

Many students and teachers feel iPads have been an advantage and help in the classroom. Railey Quattlebaum, sophomore, says “I like having the iPads because we can be organized by having everything in one spot with Notability and Pages.” Many students agree with Railey, but the iPad has also been misused in many ways. A junior, Brooke Moen says “Many people abuse the iPads and I am afraid this privilege might be stripped away.” Students like Brooke are aware that many students play games during class, and are afraid this will cause them to be taken.

After all the rumors, will the iPads be here next year? Chief Technology Officer for the district, Gary Black, says getting rid of the iPads is not something he would do. He says “I have witnessed a huge increase in teacher/student and student/student collaboration. I think overall the devices are being used as an educational tool to enhance instruction.” So despite any controversy, iPads will still be present at Chapin High School for many years to come.
