Chapin Student Obsessions

Everyone at one point or time has been obsessed with something. Peoples “obsessions” are one thing that makes them stand out and be different. Obsessions can vary from places, objects, memories, songs, foods, and even celebrities. Some take their obsessions more seriously than others. One question I have always wondered however… What causes these obsessions and what extremes do people go to with theirs? While most may be embarrassed to share such obsessions with others, some embrace them for what they’re worth. Celebrities are a more common obsession within the students here at Chapin, including myself.

My obsession happens to be rather uncommon and strange to others. From my days as a child being wrapped up into Disney Channel and all of its stars, one in particular always stood out to me. That celebrity was Hannah Montana. Although it may sound extremely ridiculous, she is my favorite singer and always will be. I have every single one of her songs in every version possible on my iPod. I know every single word to all of her songs by heart, and there’s 132 of them. I have watched all 98 episodes on Netflix three times through. I believe that her song lyrics are seriously an inspiration. My favorites are Ordinary Girl, One in a Million and I wanna Know You. Hannah Montana can instantly cheer me up, I mean it is nearly impossible to listen to her music and remain in a bad mood. If she went on tour again I would easily be more excited than if I won the lottery; and that’s not an exaggeration. I get so excited even when I just hear her name. The Hannah Montana obsession has been going strong for around 6 years now and I am not ashamed to admit it.

There’s several other students obsessed with celebrities as well. Senior Jenna Hill has a not so secret obsession with BeyoncĂ©. “BeyoncĂ© is so fierce and a role model for women no matter their age. She’s inspirational and extremely talented as a singer.” Jenna’s obsession is both her music and the person she has become. In my opinion, it is almost as serious as my Hannah Montana craze.

Senior Evan Staub has an obsession for Demi Lovato. “When I saw Demi for the first time in person I almost had a heart attack. (Get it??) My friends took a video of me and tears were streaming down my face I was so excited.” Evan knows Demi and all of her family members birthdays. She follows all of them on twitter, and even made Demi her wallpaper on her phone. The obsession all started for Evan when she emailed Demi, explaining how much of an inspiration she is to young girls and how she really looks up to her as a role model. The email was dramatic, but Evan was hoping to get a response. Soon enough, Demi emailed her back; and an obsession was born.

Clothing stores are another obsession common within the students here at Chapin. Most girls love stores such as Forever 21, Francescas, and Charlotte Russe. Freshman Blaine Daily and Senior Madison Daily have other opinions on where they like to shop. JCrew is a classy clothing store located closest in Southpark Mall. Blaine and Madison practically own every article of clothing in the J.Crew store. “JCrew is definitely an obsession. I am continuously spending more time than I should be looking at their clothes online and rifling through catalogs. If you’ve never shopped there… Oh gosh I can’t even imagine that.” says Madison.

All in all, everyone is obsessed with something. Whether it be a food, celebrity or clothes, everyone seems to have one. It is just how extreme and unusual these obsessions are that make them interesting.
