CHS Varsity Wrestling Preview

The Chapin Varsity Wrestling Team will soon be kicking off the 2010-2011 season under new Head Coach, and former Assistant Coach, Logan Kubik.  This young team, returning only five seniors, will have a legitimate shot at competing in state this year.  Seniors Nate Polly, Stuart Hope, Andrew Mize, Russell Smigelski, and Seth Stevens hope to lead the Eagles to a State Championship.

“I think that our team has a really good shot as winning state this year. Everyone works there butt off during each practice to get better. The goal is to win state this year, and everyone is working as hard as they can so that our team can get it.” Said Senior Nate Polly.

Last year, in the Palmetto State Classic, Stuart Hope placed first in his weight class, going undefeated throughout the tournament.  Scott Swindell and Nate Polly placed second in their weight classes. The squad finished the season with an astounding 31-2 record, losing only to Rock Hill and Lugoff-Elgin.  As a team, the Eagles placed 1st in the Patriot Duals Tournament, the US Navy Duals Tournament, and the Gamecock Duals.

“This year our goal is to bring home the State Championship. We feel like its our year and we have a good coach, coach Kubik, who will take us there” said Junior Ryan Moore.

One of the Eagles toughest matches this year will be against Lugoff-Elgin. “They are always good and its a hated rivalry,” added Moore.
