First becoming popular in 2000 with the release of their hit “Yellow,” alternative rock band Coldplay has since gained a lot of fans and fame and has captivated their audience with their unique sound. Coldplay’s most recent album, “Mylo Xyloto,” topped the Billboard Top 200 Album chart, debuting at the number one spot. It was the band’s third consecutive number one debut, and they sold more than 447,000 copies in its first week on shelves. Coldplay also took the top spots on the charts in the UK.
“Mylo Xyloto” features 14 new tracks including “Charlie Brown,” “Major Minus,” and the more popular songs “Paradise” and “Princess of China,” which features vocals by R&B singer Rihanna.
Upon listening to “Mylo Xyloto,” I was very impressed. I have always been a fan of Coldplay and their music, and I think it’s safe to say that I am an even bigger fan after having listened to this album. The music on this album has great beats and tunes and I love that the band chose to play around with various sounds and melodies. The album has a bit of an electronic sound, and I felt that it was a little different from past albums such as “X&Y” and “Viva La Vida.”
“Every Teardrop Is a Waterfall” is a song that perfectly exhibits the bands’ upbeat sound. It is a song about taking risks and living carefree and basically just enjoying life without worrying about the consequences.
The album also features more sorrowful ballads such as “Up in Flames.” It is about the ending of a relationship. It talks about accepting that it is really over and dealing with the pain of knowing that your significant other has moved on and will find someone else. Every song on the album seems to have some important meaning.
Even the album cover and artwork is associated with something important to Coldplay. The artwork is very colorful and is done similar to walls of graffiti. It is adorned in lyrics of Coldplay’s various songs done in spray-paint lettering. The band says that it was inspired by 1970’s graffiti inNew Yorkand the street writers of the ‘70s. Graffiti was primarily used by these political activists to make statements of their opinions and have their voices heard.
As for the meaning of the album title, “Mylo Xyloto,” Coldplay says that there actually is no meaning. They even admit to making up the word “Xyloto.” They wanted to start off with a clean slate, and let their music lyrically define and give meaning to “Mylo Xyloto.”
Overall, I really enjoyed the album and would recommend it to anyone who enjoys alternative rock. This is probably one of my favorite albums by Coldplay and I urge any other fans of the band to listen as well.
