Halloween has always been a popular and fun holiday for many people. Several people look forward to this day because it provides thrilling/hands-on activities; Activities like trick-or-treating, creating/dressing up in a costume, or decorating the inside, and outside, of your houses. Halloween can provide a day of diversion, where you can scream out your fears like it’s normal, and do spooky things you wouldn’t do on other days. This holiday gives you a break from your daily routine, it provides you with a day of creative play. Alongside that, it is a chance to engage with spooky themed events, and a festive atmosphere unique to the autumn season. Halloween also can help spark different topics of discussion to our daily lives, such as talking about scary movies, or even certain costumes. Interaction throughout this day is expanded due to the constant connections being made with people whether that’s through parties or simply trick-or-treating.
That said, many young adults, around the ages of 17 to their late 20s, don’t participate much, in comparison to younger individuals ages 4-16, to Halloween events like trick or treating, or passing out candies. One main reason for this is because they simply think they’re too old to do such things. However, this might change for people who become parents because they’ll want to spend more time doing what their kids might like. Other factors that might contribute to the decreasing amount of young adults participating in Halloween events are: increased amount of time spent on online platforms, priority of other activities like work or school, or simply just the loss of interest at a older age. Although some reasons for young adults to stop being active on Halloween might be more reasonable than others, it is always nice to experience days like this that only come once a year. There are many ways one can enjoy today as a young adult. Below are some of the many activities/ways young adults can enjoy Halloween.
- Attend, or host, a Halloween costume party for friends and families. It might feel awkward for some to dress up in a costume, at their age, for strangers to see, but it might be different for people you know. Instead of considering how others feel about you dressed up in a costume, your friends/families would care because you’re all familiar with each other, and you’re all going to be in one.
- Relive our youth by recreating childhood memories. We all have been young once, and if you ever went trick or treating, it was most likely fun for your young self. You should experience those moments again, as it will be harder to do so as an “adult”, because you’ll start to have less time to have fun, and you’ll start a family… where your focus is shifted on them, instead of solely your own likings.
- Supervise your younger siblings. Many families have multiple children. If you’re the older sibling, you should tag along with your younger sibling. That way you experience the fun without needing to worry about what others think about you, and who knows, maybe your sibling will share some candies with you.
- Go to a haunted house with friends/families. Haunted houses are a great way to connect with friends and family because the shared experience of being startled or frightened builds trust and provides opportunities for support. The more scared someone is, the more likely they would cling onto someone to lessen their fear, which increases bonds with each other.
- Simply watch a horror movie with friends/families in honor of the spooky season. Many Halloween/spooky themed movies are created during the Halloween season. If this genre isn’t your go-to genre, trying something new with others makes the experience much more fun. The screams and tears would be mainly out of enjoyment and laughter, rather than fear and panic.
- Visit an escape room with friends/families. Escape rooms are in season for Halloween, it has a spooky theme, combined with teamwork, and problem-solving in a safe/controlled environment. It allows you to sharpen your mind, while also letting you engage with fun activities that can create memorable experiences.
Halloween is coming sooner than you know it, and if you don’t have a plan for this day, make one! Everyone deserves a day where they can let their burden/stress out of their mind, and this is one of the few days each year where you can, and should. Your goals and admissions in life are important, but so is taking breaks and enjoying life in the moment. Halloween is not all about Trick or Treating, or collecting candies, it’s about spending a day off to have fun and let your imagination run free.
There are many ways to celebrate Halloween. It could be big, or small; simple, or extravagant. It doesn’t matter how big you make the celebration, as long as it makes you happy/thrilled, that is the purpose of Halloween. The intentions behind Halloween are greater than it seems, while it’s your choice to participate in this holiday, it’s important to acknowledge the missing memories and activities you may miss out on. Additionally, adding onto the spirit of Halloween, it is beneficial to understand that we are living in the moment, and that even though we are growing up, that doesn’t mean we don’t need a break to have fun and mess around.
