You may be asking yourself what do these two characters–The Grinch and SpongeBob SquarePants– have in common? Well the answer is nothing really. However, McDonald’s and Burger King have now put them head to head. The McDonald’s Grinch meal became available on December 2nd, the same day the SpongeBob meal was released from Burger King.
McDonald’s and Burger King have a long standing rivalry, since the 1970s they have been targeting each other with competitive ads and now is no different.
The companies released these 2 meals and many have been curious about which is better. On social media you can find reviews and taste for each meal but there has not been many comparisons made to decide which one is better but, that is what I want to find out.
At McDonald’s the Grinch meal cost $13 at the local Chapin McDonald’s. With the meal you can get a 10 piece nugget or Big Mac, a medium fry and drink, as well as what makes the meal special, Grinch dill pickle salt and a pair of grinch themed socks.
While at Burger King the SpongeBob meal comes with a SpongeBob Krabby Whopper, Mr. Krab’s Cheesy Bacon tots, Patrick’s Star-berry shortcake pie, and a pirates frozen pineapple float. You can order these items separately or you can buy all items in the Bikini Bottom bundle for $18 at the Burger King in Ballentine.
I think it is important to note the variety of items in the Burger King meal compared to McDonald’s, you get many more exclusive items while the only specialty about the McDonald’s meal is the packaging, salt, and socks.
When tasting the McDonald’s Grinch meal I noticed that the items were very popular. The first McDonald’s I went to was sold out of the pickle fries and the second location had the items in stock, however I heard the customer before me ordering 5 of the same meal.
When tasting the McDonald’s Grinch fries they did not taste how I was expecting, the salt was very green which was not advertised, but it did add to the Grinch look. The salt gave the fries a very pickle taste but it was very artificial. I would compare it to a similar taste to the Sonic Pickle Slushie, if you were a fan of that you would like the Grinch fries.
The SpongeBob “Krabby Patty” was a normal whopper with a yellow bun, as you ate the bun it looked like you were eating a sponge. The cheddar bacon tots were cheesy, but did not have much bacon in it. The Burger King I went to was out of the Patrick Star Pie and the frozen pineapple Fanta.
I think both meals were trying to grab attention and it worked. They both have had reviews on social media and people have been talking about the food. However, they definitely aren’t my number one choice at either restaurant.
