Coach Gentry ready to continue football teams tradition of competition

What brought you to Chapin and how did you hear about the job?

I coached football at Lake City high school which is in Myrtle Beach.  I always had my eye on Chapin. I knew Coach Early, and he is the one that told me about the job. At first I wanted to become an assistant here but ended up being the head coach.

You mentioned that you knew Coach Early. How did you know him? And what did you think about the situation that happened last year with him?

Well, we were both coaches at high schools in Myrtle Beach.  We were actually old region foes.  I know that he had challenges and obstacles here and that’s why he left.

What coaching techniques do you use during practice?

I use a varied approach when it comes to practice. Sometimes I take a calm and laid back approach.  However, when I raise my voice the players know that I am being serious and they need to be serious too.

How do you deal with a tough loss?

Well all losses are tough.  I try to look back at the game and think of what I did and what I could have done instead.  I’m very critical on myself and try to think of what I can improve for the next week and bring those plans to the next practice.

What do you tell the players after a loss? A win?

I always tell my players to savor a victory and get over a loss.  This does not mean I want them to be happy about a loss though.  I want the loss to mean something to them.  I tell them that they can only improve and they can’t change what happened.  After a win I tell them to enjoy it.  However, at our next practice I don’t want them focused on what happened at the previous game but focused at the game to come.

What is your ultimate goal with the team?

I actually set four goals for the team.  The first and second one were not accomplished but they were to go through the season undefeated and to win region.  The second two are still reachable.  These goals are to make playoffs and state championships.  A goal I set for myself is to build a football program not just a season.  I am not here for just a few seasons.  I plan to stay here for a while and I want every season to be strong.

Is there anything you want to improve?

I drastically want to improve what happens during off-season.  I want the weight room and what the players do in the weight room to improve majorly.

What do you look for in your players- both physically and mentally?

I don’t look for anything physically just as long as their willing to become bigger, faster, and stronger.  For personality, I look for someone who will never give up and has a good attitude.
