Is Big Brother watching Your iPad?

One fear many students have is of the school district tracking their iPad and internet usage. The district uses AirWatch, a Mobile Device Management System (MDM) allowing the district to keep an inventory of iPads. AirWatch does not allow the school district to see what is on the iPads.

Some students are concerned about the district being able to see everything they do on his or her iPad. According to Mrs. Berry, the district is able to see “…nothing, AirWatch is just used for inventory.” The district is looking for apps that are bad for the school environment. “AirWatch can tell if someone installs a bad app.” Some examples of bad apps would be ones that allow students to bypass the school’s filter.

There have not been many problems with technology usage at Chapin High School so far. Consequences of misuse vary. According to Mrs. Berry, “It depends on what the student does, it is usually a warning. If the offense is really bad the device may get taken away.” However, there have not been many problems at the school because as Berry says, “We have good students.”

Mrs. Berry thinks there will be fewer problems with technology as time goes on because “Students will get used to it (iPads). Once it becomes less of a toy and more of a tool there will be fewer problems.” Mrs. Berry suggests students “follow the rules and turn on Find my iPad,” to prevent issues with technology usage at school. If a student misplaces an iPad, this is the easiest way to locate it. However, the iPad needs to have power in order to receive the signal, so as soon as a student realizes the device is gone, he or she needs to report it immediately.
