Parenthood

Coming home from school many students turn on the TV to relax. Most students tune in to sports events, reality T.V shows, and gossip shows. But one show that students need to add to their list of must watch shows is Parenthood. Parenthood is an hour long drama, inspired by the 1989 box office hit of the same name. The film’s director, Ron Howard, serves as one of the show’s producers. The show introduces viewers to the large, very colorful Braverman family. Sarah Braverman (played by Lauren Graham of Gilmore Girls fame) is a single mom who moves back to her hometown to be closer to her family. Then there’s Julia Braverman, a corporate attorney struggling to balance work and family, while dealing with her stay-at-home husband, Joel. The younger brother, Crosby, is only just barely coming to terms with being an adult when he learns that he has a son. Oldest sibling Adam deals with a crisis of his own when his son is diagnosed with Asperger’s syndrome. Along with the many family member’s stories, the plot consists of many semi-relatable situations. Adam goes snooping on his daughter’s computer, only to realize she has been hiding boyfriend. Single mom Sarah breaks the news to her daughter that she has met someone – that someone being her daughter’s teacher. Parenthood is an hour long escape that allows the audience to glimpse into the lives of these believable adults dealing with the problems of parenthood and what happens when you have to start over. Despite the shows adult focus, students have tuned in as well. “It’s refreshing to see a family that is more dysfunctional than my own,” says junior Caleb Addy. Parenthood appears on NBC on Tuesday nights at ten.
