Thank God It’s Monday

English teacher Tim Anderson’s 2A class never has a dull day in portable seven, especially when Rick Monday is involved. Rick Monday is a classic American hero that many people don’t know about, but in Anderson’s 2A class he is a highly respected idol. Rick Monday has inspired the famous flash Pledges heard all across Chapin High School, and has lead to a war with English teacher Stephanie Huckabee’s 2A class. They also have special T-shirts which Anderson’s whole class purchased. In portable seven, it’s safe to say “Thank God it’s Monday.”

But who is Rick Monday? Rick Monday use to be a baseball player for the Chicago Cubs and then the Los Angeles Dodgers, but  his claim to fame came when he saved the American flag. On April 25, 1976 during the seventh inning stretch at a Dodgers game, two protesters, a man and his 11 year old son, tried to burn an American flag. Rick Monday refused to let this happen and ran and grabbed the flag away saving it. This famous video is how Anderson’s class first got started on Rick Monday’s legacy. Jake Kea a junior agrees that Rick Monday is an inspiration to America.“It inspires us to be the best Americans we can be.”

What Anderson’s class is most famous for around Chapin High School is the flash Pledge. The flash Pledge take place when Anderson’s class chooses a target – the class they want to go to in order to do their flash Pledge. Then, during the Pledge, the students surround the target classroom and scream the pledge at the top of their lungs. Paul Collingwood a sophomore said, “My favorite thing about it is we’ve made a really big deal about it.”

So far they have flash Pledged Mr. Mewbourne, Ms. Huckabee, Coach William, the English hall, and the front office which was broadcast over the announcements. The only class brave enough to fight back was Huckabee’s Public Speaking class; this war went on for almost two weeks. Huckabee’s class lost. Alexa Eyring, a sophomore, likes the flash Pledges a lot. “The English hall was my favorite because we covered a lot of area and that’s where our rivalry is with Huckabee’s class.”

Rick Monday impacted America by saving our flag, but he has also made an impact on Anderson’s class as well. Rick Monday has taken an already amazing class to a whole new level thanks to Mr. Anderson. From pledging the whole school to making t-shirts, Rick Monday has brought the whole class closer.  All there is to say is  “Thank God it’s Monday!”
