Jack’s Road to Recovery

On March 4th, 2015 Jack Enright fractured his neck while playing in the Chapin Varsity lacrosse game. Right after his injury Jack was paralyzed from the chest down and had little function in his hands. Doctors said he had a 10% chance of ever walking again.

9 months later, he has defeated the odds and is on his road to recovery. Jack spent multiple weeks at the Shepard Center in Atlanta and has worked hard to recover from his injury. Jack recently has been practicing walking with a cane, and has gotten as far as 1,300 feet in one session. Ever since he got hurt, Jack has been looking forward to participating in Project Walk. Project Walk is a recovery center in Atlanta that provides an improved quality of life to people with spinal cord injuries through intense exercise-based recovery programs, education, support and encouragement.

Chapin High School wanted to help Jack get to Project Walk, so Student Government members decided to pass a bucket around at the Varsity football games to collect donations. In just four games, students, parents, and community members were able to raise the full $3,000 to send Jack to Project Walk.

Jack will attend Project Walk in Atlanta the three days before Christmas Eve and the three days after Christmas. Jack, along with one member of his family, will stay in a nearby hotel during his therapy. He will participate in intensive therapy for three to five hours each day, focusing on endurance, strengthening and fine tuning muscles and nerves.

Ms. Williams, Student Government adviser, has gone to great lengths to get the Chapin community involved in Jack’s recovery. When asked what inspired to help Jack she said, “I felt like Jack was an amazing young man who deserves to have all the support in the world on this journey. Getting to work with him everyday has been the greatest gift God has given me this year. He inspires me everyday. I am so proud of Jack and everything he is doing.”

All of Chapin will continue to support Jack through his road to recovery. “CHS and the community as a whole has been a huge part of my motivation, ” said Jack. “Seeing how much support I’ve gotten in very inspiring and I wouldn’t want to live anywhere else.”
