The South Carolina Board of Education says the main goal of the cell phone ban was to reduce the mental health issues caused by cell phones. After the law was passed, students expressed concern about it.
“Teachers shouldn’t be allowed to take phones from students, we should be able to keep them in our bookbags,” said Claire Hallowell, a Junior.
Isabella Ramos Rico, a Junior, said, “It isn’t fair that we can’t use our phones once we are done with our work.”
Students have expressed their outrage about the phone ban. They say that having their phones taken from them during the day makes them feel disconnected from their parents and unsafe in case of emergencies. They also say that they are more focused on not having access to their phones than on their schoolwork.
Other students hope that this new ban will improve their grades and encourage them to socialize more with their classmates.
“I am okay with the phone ban during instructional time, but during lunch and in hallways, I think it isn’t helping,” said Presley Short, a Freshman.
Overall, the public is now well aware of the disagreement with the ban. Countless people have posted online expressing their hatred for it, but they haven’t written to the SC Board of Education, which is responsible for it.
