The Dangers of Driving Under the Influence

Last week at Chapin High School,  the school decided to help bring awareness to a very serious topic: Drinking and Driving.

A wrecked car was placed in the arena parking lot to display the possible outcome of driving under the influence. Their were also police officers at the school who set up a “Drunk driving” course to show kids how alcohol could impair their ability to drive a motor vehicle.

A lot of kids don’t usually consider just how dangerous it can be to drive under the influence. Not only are they putting their own lives at risk, but also the people around them.  “It’s not a decision that only affects you, you are potentially harming the lives of many other people,” said senior, Molly Stewart.

Every day, 29 people in the United States die in car wrecks that involve an alcohol-impaired driver. This would mean one death every 50 minutes.

“I think the school did a great job of teaching students the horrible affects of drunk driving. It was smart of them to do it now considering it was right before prom,” said senior, Olivia Spencer.

It is important that we instill the consequences that come along with drunk driving to the students of Chapin High School for their safety and well being.
