The interest in pinterest

Hours can be consumed scrolling through picture after picture of places to visit, clothes to buy, food to make, crafts to try, and so many more. No its not Facebook. It’s the one of the latest online addictions- Pinterest.  Pinterest has swept over Chapin in the last few months with many students joining to see what the excitement is about.

Junior Hannah Derrick is a new addition to the Pinterest community.

“I wanted a Pinterest because I love to look at what everyone is doing and their hopes and aspirations,” said Derrick.

Pinterest is an online community that is sort of like a blog with subscribers posting or “pinning” things of interest on their boards for others to check out.  Anyone can join but it seems to be most popular with women of all ages.

Junior Mary Efird likes Pinterest because of its uniqueness.

“The pictures are always super interesting and it is not normal everyday stuff that you can find,” said Efird.

Pinterest became active in 2010, but it was not until recently that it became so popular. The site which averages about 21 million views per month is made up of pictures that can reflect personal style or individual creativity. There are ideas and pictures to appeal to every interest ranging from photography to food. Some of the favorite subjects for students to pin are food, clothing, home decor, quotes, and crafts.

“People can look at craft ideas they want to do and food that they possibly want to make, and have these different style ideas that they have never thought of before,” said junior Swain Spearman.

Junior Caroline Amick is also eager to try some of the clothing ideas she has seen on Pinterest.

“I really want to try this one pin about scarves and how you can tie them and try to make a T shirt scarf,” said Amick.

Pinterest shares some similar aspects of Twitter. Users can be followed by or follow their friends. Once someone is being followed all their pins can be seen and re-pinned to a user’s profile.

“When people re-pin my pins it makes me feel like my ideas are cool and I have good taste,” said junior Samantha Connelly.

Pinterest can be addictive. It seems like once someone begins they can not stop. Students admitted to having an obsession with the website, having 100-800 pins, and checking the website at least once a day.

Spearman admits to having an obsession to the website.

“I have around 860 pins. I get on Pinterest every day after track before I do homework just because it is so much fun,” said Spearman.

It has become an obsession for most because it allows for a person’s true creativity to show.

” I am pretty much on it like five times a day. It is a board of how you wish your life were but don’t have the time or the money or creativity to make it that way. I obviously don’t dress that awesome or look that awesome or make that awesome food everyday, but if I could this is what my life would be like,” said Connelly.

Students can check out the site for themselves at pinterest.com.
