Students are falling for season change

Students get excited when they see symbols like black cats and pumpkins that represent fall.

The air is filled with the smell of cinnamon and apple spice. The cool breeze is blowing, causing the temperature to be perfect.  Red, orange and yellow leaves crunch beneath feet. Pumpkins line the porches of people’s homes and fires are roaring in fire places.

Fall is finally here.

Fall is a favorite season of many students and CHS. Fall is a time where the weather gets to be perfect and coats and scarves begin to be pulled out. The menu changes to soups and roasts and fun holidays and events occur.

Fall is the time of cheering on the high school football team on a Friday night, having bonfires on the weekend and carving pumpkins on a Sunday afternoon with family while drinking hot cocoa, the aroma of autumn filling the house.

Sophomore Abby Malcom said, “My favorite fall smell is warm vanilla because it’s cozy and warm. It balances between the cold weather and the warm weather.”

Fall is great for many reasons. It’s a time for holiday memories with family. Thanksgiving is the perfect time to sit around the table with family, eating delicious foods likeTurkey, Mac & Cheese and Grandma’s homemade stuffing but, somehow there’s always room for dessert.

Fall is cold enough to pull out a favorite fall/winter item like boots, sweatshirts and scarves, yet it’s still warm enough for t-shirts.

Sophomore Kelly Smothers said, “I like fall clothes more than summer because there’s more variety to choose from.”

Fall is the fair with Farris wheels, elephant ears and carnival games.

Junior Kemp Gregg said, “My favorite thing about fall is the State Fair because of the great food and fun rides.”

There are so many other great events that happen during fall time. Many churches have fall festivals, trunk-or-treats, hayrides, corn mazes and haunted houses. On Halloween kids go trick-or-treating, enter into costume contests and enjoy pumpkin carving.

Fall is also great because it means a new menu with warmer foods. Steaming chicken noodle soup, fresh off the stove. Chili with a hint of spice and honey cornbread. Apple cider inviting cinnamon and cloves. Pot roast and creamy mashed potatoes, with pumpkin pie to round out a homey comfort meal.

Everyone looks forward to fall for at least one reason, whether it is the changing season, cooler weather, fun events, the delectable food or getting an extra hour of sleep when Daylight Savings occurs, or possibly one of the best reasons…it brings the “most wonderful time of the year” even closer…

Erika Jones, Business and Production Manager
Erika is a senior this year at Chapin and it is her second year on the newspaper staff. Her role is the Business and Production manager. She plans on studying early childhood education in college and would like to teach first grade. Erika loves writing, and is in the process of writing a novel. She has been working at HandPicked since November 2012 and loves her job a lot. She loves music, sings in the school concert choir and takes private voice lessons. Her head is often in other places than where it should be and can be known to be a bit of a procrastinator. She is extremely creative and artsy, and enjoys doing things that allow her to express herself. She loves to read books worth rereading (like her FAVORITE, Harry Potter, which you could say she's obsessed with) and she wants more than anything to travel the world.
