Students Speak Out: College Scandal

One of the five things the students are talking about

50 people have been charged with one of the biggest educational scandals in U.S. history.

Coaches, ACT/SAT test proctors, and college administrators are just a few of the people that were involved in getting many kids into elite colleges by being bribed by many of the students’ parents.  The whole scheme was driven and made possible by William Rick Singer CEO of a College prep company called The Key.  William Singer would be paid up to half a million dollars in some cases to either doctor ACT or SAT scores or get kids into colleges by making them seem like elite athletes.  Mr.Singer would set up for test proctors or graders of the test to be paid to make test scores seem better than they actually were.  People would also be paid to take kids test for them and get a high grade.

Mr. Singer also Photoshopped kids faces onto elite high school athletes to be put on the roster for some of these elite schools.  The coaches would be paid to accept these kids and put them on the sports roster.  Many times the kids that got in due to a false sports profile would be coincidentally hurt or have to leave the team for some other reason but still remain at the school.

Current college students and seniors that will be attended colleges all seem to be upset with the parents paying their kids way into higher education. Senior Jill Fowler says, “I feel like no parent should ever be allowed to get away with that [bribing colleges], no matter their social status.” She said, “Colleges should review applications and accept students based on the collectivity of their grades, scores, and involvement in the community. For a parent to pay for their kid to get in, disrespects the rest of the school’s students and their effort to get in the proper way.”
