ALLY: BEST FILM: AVATAR

Best movie of the year. I believe it is the best movie of the year because of the cinematography, dialogue, and the theme. It is a truly revolutionary movie, and way ahead of its time. James Cameron, the Oscar-winning director of “Titanic,” took four years to make this movie because of all the new special effects. The main character, Jake Sully, is an ex-marine and is put into a world called Pandora. In Pandora, they are put into machines to turn into creatures called “Avatars”. The purpose of doing this is to find a rare mineral called Unobtanium that would help the world’s energy problem. By doing this, they are destroying the avatars home and their source of food, water, and shelter. Jake Sully finds himself attached to the community, and realizes that what the scientist are doing is wrong.

DANIELLE: Unobtanium? REALLY? No. I don’t think so. That “element” is a horrible play on words and is half the reason why I will never see this movie. Also, I don’t believe that one day humans will be sent to a planet named after a mythical person and transformed into 59 feet tall creatures.

DANIELLE: BEST FILM: INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS

I’m going with Inglourious Basterds. This movie provides its audience with a much needed alternate ending to World War II. Inglourious Basterds isn’t your average war movie geared towards a male audience; in fact, I found the movie attracted an even number of girls and guys that either planned to see the movie or had seen – and loved – it. The movie refreshes common movie goers, choosing its own path instead of the same old plot with the same old actors.

ALLY: Quentin Tarantino has made the same movie 50 times and basically, I’m tired of ridiculous satire, weird characters, and copious amounts of blood.  Not so cool anymore, Danielle.

ALLY: BEST ACTOR: JEFF BRIDGES

One of the best performances by Jeff Bridges I have ever seen. The only movie I can compare this performance to is Elizabeth Taylor in “Whose Afraid of Virginia Wolfe?” Like Elizabeth Taylor, Jeff Bridges is an alcoholic and a chain-smoker. Jeff Bridges sports the worn wardrobe, greasy hair, and beard and in effect, makes you believe he is actually a 57 year old country singer who lost his touch a long time ago.

DANIELLE: I don’t think alcoholism is entertaining. Also, I can barely remember who Jeff Bridges is. All I know is that he’s got disgusting hair and a smoker’s cough. Not really memorable qualities, if you ask me, Ally.

DANIELLE: BEST ACTOR: GEORGE CLOONEY

George Clooney is one of Hollywood’s best and most classy actors, in my opinion. Whatever role he plays, he puts amazing amounts of effort into his character so his audiences better understand the movie. I’ve seen horrible, bad, minimally adequate and amazing talent when it comes to Hollywood, and George Clooney never disappoints. Clooney has three Oscar nominations and one Oscar under his belt, not to mention many other awards, and has proved to movie lovers that he indeed has depths of acting talent that his fellow actors should attempt to tap in to.

ALLY: Last time I checked the only reason girls go see George Clooney’s movies are for his smoldering good looks, and not for the quality of the film.  It’s really entertaining to watch people travel, I promise.

DANIELLE: I can’t help that he’s beautiful and he can act. Whatever, Ally, whatever.

ALLY: BEST ACTRESS: MERYL STREEP

I believe Meryl Streep should win this because I have been in love with Meryl Streep since I saw the movie “Sophie’s Choice”. In Julia and Julie, she portrays Julia Child, who wrote the cook book, “Mastering the Art of French Cooking”. In this role, she is truly charming and magical. By what I’ve read about Julia Child, Meryl Streep does a perfect portrayal of her. She is so innocent and it’s impossible not to fall in love with her character. Let’s just say, Meryl Streep made me want to go and cook a French meal.

DANIELLE: Wasn’t Sophie’s Choice made in 1980? I don’t know if you know this, Ally, but you weren’t even alive. Get with the times, kid. Who cooks anymore? We’ve got McDonalds, Hardees, Taco Bell? They’re a delicious, cheap combination of unhealthy food.

DANIELLE: BEST ACTRESS: SANDRA BULLOCK

Any movie I have seen with Sandra Bullock in it I have loved. She has a personality that reaches past the limits of the movie screen and into the audience – a personality that women all around can relate to. Usually she plays a quirky woman with a few humorous problems (i.e. Miss Congeniality, All About Steve) but her role in The Blind Side landed her with an Oscar nominee. Her character is strong and resilient throughout the movie – a role perfectly fitting for her. Sandra Bullock has always been one of my favorite actresses and I feel that she deserves to win the award for Best Actress, no doubt about it.

ALLY: I haven’t seen this movie, Danielle.

DANIELLE: I wish I’d never seen you, Ally.

ALLY: Ditto.
